Varicose Veins

A  vein is a blood vessel that carries blood low in oxygen content from  the body to the lungs and heart.  It is a normal part of the circulatory  system.

A  vein is a blood vessel that carries blood low in oxygen content from  the body to the lungs and heart.  It is a normal part of the circulatory  system.

Varicose veins are abnormally and irregularly swollen veins  (the blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the body  tissues).

The varicose veins run downwards from the thighs to  ankles near the surface of the leg. Varicose veins develop slowly, but  once they start they progress.  They do not get better on their own.

Causes of Varicose Veins

Pregnancy  is not the cause, but varicose veins can develop or worsen during  pregnancy.  This is due to increased pressure from the uterus on the  pelvic and leg veins, increased blood volume and changing hormones.

Varicose  veins on the surface of your legs are usually not associated with  dangerous blood clots that can travel to your  lungs and cause an  obstruction (embolism).

Any clot that forms near the surface will  generally be small. There may be inflammation, but the clot does not  usually seriously threaten your health.  However it is strongly  recommended that you make an appointment with your doctor to make sure  that there are no clots involving the deep veins.

Varicose Veins

Spider  veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that also twist and  turn. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin, as well. They  are typically visible on the legs and face.

The  exact cause of Spider Veins is not proven, but heredity, local trauma,  and hormonal levels are believed to be contributing factors.

Spider Veins become more numerous with age, and are twice as common in women.

Spider  Veins are dilated small veins under the surface of the skin, mostly on  the legs. They look like red or purple sunbursts or web patterns.

Spider  Veins are also referred to as telangiectasia or broken capillaries.  They usually pose no health hazard but may produce a dull aching or  burning in the legs after prolonged standing.

Treatment of Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is the best and safest treatment for Spider Veins. It causes minimal discomfort.

Sclerotherapy  for Spider Veins generally requires multiple treatment sessions.  Post-treatment therapy includes wearing compression bandages or support  hose for three days to two weeks following the treatment.  Although  Sclerotherapy works for current Spider Veins, it does not prevent future  ones from developing.

Causes of Spider Veins:

  • Heredity
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Pregnancy
  • Lifestyle/Occupation

EVLT  is a relatively simple procedure.  Dr Singireddy uses ultrasound to see  the vein being treated.  After giving local anesthetic (usually  lidocaine) a small needle is used to get into the vein and a thin wire  is advanced through this needle over which a catheter is advanced into  the vein and positioned appropriately.

A thin laser fiber is then inserted through the catheter.  Following  this local anesthesia is given surrounding the vein.  The laser fiber is  activated and slowly withdrawn to shut the vein close.  Laser energy is  delivered to seal the faulty vein, shrinking and closing the vein so  that the blood cannot flow through it.  This eliminates the feeding vein  at its source.  After treatment, blood flow is then diverted to the  many normal veins in the leg.

Most patients will see  relief of symptoms such as leg pain and leg heaviness in a few days and  can regain the confidence to wear shorts and dresses soon afterwords.  Patients are also encouraged to return to normal activities  immediately.

After the Procedure

Following  the procedure, dressing and compression stocking will be applied which  should be kept for 48 hours (2days),  following which the dressing is  removed and patient may shower and wear the stocking back on again  immediately for 5 additional days, day and night but may take the  stocking off to shower each day.  Patients can resume most of the normal  activities the day after the procedure.

However  patients are expected to avoid weightlifting more than 50 pounds.   Running, jogging and active sports (like football, tennis, volley ball  etc) should be avoided for 2 weeks. Walking is encouraged.

Application of ice packs along the course of the treated vein will help  in reducing pain, swelling and bruising.  Patients are advised to avoid  sunbathing and hot tub bath as long as there is a bruise.  Patients are  seen for follow up at Suncoast Vein & Vascular Clinic 4 to 5 weeks  after the laser procedure.

Facts about EVLT

  • No surgery or scars
  • Return to normal activities immediately
  • No general anesthesia
  • Rapid relief from pain
